Introduction

Hello everyone! I am Wishman Gaitan Miranda, a Systems Engineering student at Universidad Fidélitas in Costa Rica with a technical background in Computer Networks. I am pleased to share my final report for the WPCredits course. This report summarizes my contributions to the open-source ecosystem, the technical challenges I faced, and the professional skills I acquired throughout this journey. I hope my experience inspires other students and developers to actively contribute to global open-source projects like WordPress.

 

Teams and Projects I Contributed To

  • Team: Polyglots (WordPress Translation & Localization Team).
  • Project Focus: My contribution focused on the localization and Quality Assurance (QA) of essential WooCommerce strings, technical interface elements, and AI integration features into the Spanish (Costa Rica) locale (es_CR). The main goal was to eliminate language barriers for Spanish-speaking users, store owners, and developers by ensuring precise, context-aware, and grammatically accurate translations.

 

Learning Resources

  • Guides & Documentation: I relied on the official WordPress Polyglots Handbook, the official Costa Rica Glossary and Style Guide (es_CR), and the GlotPress translation interface documentation.
  • Mentorship & Community: I received guidance through community documentation, style guides curated by General Translation Editors (GTE), and asynchronous feedback within the official channels and GlotPress status logs.

 

Challenges and Solutions

  • Challenge 1: Translating complex AI and technical terminology. Localizing novel technical concepts such as Model Context Protocol (MCP), AI-powered store operations, and page caching performance parameters without losing precision or altering technical intent.

    Solution: I researched official technical glossaries, cross-referenced documentation on AI integration protocols, and applied standardized neutral terms suitable for the es_CR locale.

  • Challenge 2: Maintaining syntax integrity in technical descriptions. Handling strings containing code parameters, cookie definitions, and inline HTML formatting without breaking interface rendering.

    Solution: I conducted rigorous QA checks prior to submission, ensuring that punctuation, technical variables, and code tags remained completely intact.

  • Challenge 3: Information overload during initial onboarding. Navigating the extensive hierarchy of translation roles (PTE, GTE) and workflow statuses within GlotPress.

    Solution: I structured a personal step-by-step workflow and systematically documented every milestone in my project blog to track progress clearly.

During this project, I successfully submitted and received official approval for my translation contributions on GlotPress for the es_CR locale within WooCommerce:

[Performance] Removes session cookies for non-logged in customers when session data is empty, improving page caching performance. May cause compatibility issues with extensions that depend on the session cookie without using session data. When enabled, PayPal will use the address provided by the checkout form, and prevent the buyer from changing it inside the PayPal payment page. Disable this to let buyers choose a shipping address from their PayPal account. PayPal verifies addresses therefore this setting can cause errors (we recommend keeping it disabled). Key Takeaways from the WPCredits Course

The WPCredits course provided me with essential lessons regarding global open-source engineering and community collaboration. My main takeaways include:

  • Understanding how open-source governance and Quality Assurance (QA) workflows maintain software stability across millions of active installations.
  • Recognizing the critical role of software localization in making advanced technological tools (like AI protocols and e-commerce caching) accessible worldwide.
  • Connecting with the global WordPress community and understanding the badges and credits contribution model.

 

New Skills Acquired

  • Technical Skills: Software Localization, Quality Assurance (QA) for internationalization (i18n), GlotPress workflow management, technical translation of AI/caching parameters, and compliance with regional style guides.
  • Soft Skills: Asynchronous communication, high attention to detail, technical documentation, time management, and self-directed problem solving.

 

Personal Reflections and Next Steps

Contributing to WordPress through the WPCredits course has been a deeply rewarding milestone in my academic and professional career. What impressed me most was the level of technical precision required for localization—it goes far beyond word translation; it involves preserving software logic, usability, and technical context. Seeing my approved contributions actively supporting the Spanish-speaking community in WooCommerce is immensely gratifying.
